You never know where you might find work. Everyone has heard to make connections when looking for a job, distribute your resume EVERYWHERE, and keep your resume on your person. Take this advice while you have a job or business. Keep your business cards and, perhaps, brochures, etc. handy.
You’ve seen all the little bowls at restaurants asking for your business card to receive a free lunch. Drop it in. You never know when you’ll get a “free lunch”; whether it is actually winning a paid lunch or having someone find your card and give you a call. Leave your card on windowsills, countertops, etc. You never know who might pick it up.
Be sure to frequent and saturate companies that cater to your customers and leave your “calling card”. Ask if you can leave information or ask if the place of business will actually recommend you. For example, if you are a vending machine provider, ask the companies that install your machines to pass out your card. It’s not competition, it’s networking.
Make sure to have your cards with you at all times. You never know who might be in need of your services. You want to appear businesslike and prepared. Keep a list of references as well. Customers want to know that you come recommended. If applicable, keep pictures of finished products that you have repaired, installed, etc. Keep a file in your car, briefcase, etc.
You never know who might need you and when. Be prepared. If you are prepared on the spot, you might put that potential customer on the spot to discuss a business relationship right then and there. You could walk away one customer richer.
